Geoff and Sue Szwarcbard's Guardian Pharmacy at 393 Glenhuntly Road, Elsternwick has a treasure trove of items from chemist shops of yesteryear. Their chemist shop is quite ordinary. It looks like it could have been there a very long, long time but gets "modernised" every few decades or so. It is not large and spacious and bright like really modern pharmacies found in shopping malls. No this is a very traditional squeezed in chemist shop in a suburban shopping strip in the main street of Elsternwick. The first clue is the signs hanging in the doorway as one enters from the street.

The signs in the collection are metal - in some cases complete with rust.

Have you ever seen Dartnell's chemist on the cnr of Canturbury and Union roads in Surrey Hills. It has been there since I was a little girl and that is going back a very long time... They have not changed in all those years... They used to have a range of botles and bits in their window too...
Sharon, your home! Hope all went well with the op. Now, I would love to explore Dartnell's because I don't know anything about that area. Would you like to explore with me? We could meet at Dartnell's, take some piccies, and have some coffee. If you like this idea, please email me - link in the sidebar. Blessings and bliss and stay well and look after yourself.
Miss Eagle, I lived in South Caulfield for my first 20 years, and our family shopped in Elsternwick as long as we all lived in that area. I don't get to go down that way very often now, but everytime I've been along Glenhuntly Road in the car with Ken, I've longed to say "can we stop and walk for an hour?" But we always seem to be on the way to somewhere else :-( so it never happens. After you and Sharon have had coffee at Dartnells, would you care to meet up with me for coffee in Elsternwick one day?
Gina, I am happy to share everyone's nostalgia - and being a newby to Melbourne I would welcome your recollections. I'm sure it would make me feel like I'd been there too. In fact, I think I feel Nostalgia is a nice, safe country to be in these days. And the trip there is cheaper - and no airport tax, no security searches. So set a date and email me.
Miss Eagle: you have email!
