Revival

A message from Brigid ....

I have been a blogger since 2005. At the height of my blogging busy-ness, I had "a small stable" of blogs on different topics: social and political commentary; desert spirituality; food; waste and ....

A few years ago I called time and ceased blogging altogether - although there was an occasional post. I had called it quits. I am an aged woman these days with a couple of serious illnesses. I am not allowed to drive. I am no longer active in organisations. I think it fair to say that I am housebound. I am active on Facebook, although I am not there as often as once I was. I have decided to embark on a re-entry into the blogging world ... beginning with The Trad Pad and, possibly, a return to my food blog, Oz Tucker. I have always used a lot of photographs on my blogs ... and I miss not being out and about with my camera.

The Trad Pad has been my blog for the lovely things of life. The controversial or political has seldom intruded. Occasionally, the spiritual has found its way in, but I kept spirituality for the blog, Desert. I don't yet know if I will revive that. I will stick pretty much to food and the lovely things of life. If I have some regularity with those two categories, I feel that I will be doing well. I hope that, with this blog new friendships can be formed and old friendships renewed; new lovelies discovered; new reflections can enter into the meaning of modern life. I would love to hear from you - particularly if you have suggestions for new topics to enter into the conversation. So, it is a new year. Let's see what it has in store, what it can bring to us. And I hope that those who share the spirit of The Trad Pad can spread the message of a world of beauty, the creativity of humanity, and the joys of simplicity and tradition. ~~~ February, 2017

Inglewood's Pretty House ... and Garden ...and Garage Sale

I visited Inglewood recently. I have two favourite houses there.  The first is an older house which sits opposite the cenotaph.  The second is what I call to myself  "The Pretty House" because its garden is beautifully done and filled with colour.

On 7 December it was Inglewood Alive day.  Among all the festivities on this day is a huge day of garage sales ... and The Pretty House was no exception. It too had a garage sale.  I had taken some pictures of the front garden as I came in ... and the owners said to me to take some of the backyard too.  I didn't need to be told twice.  So here are pictures taken at The Pretty House with some of the garage sale items as well.

To market, to market, and to market at beautiful Buninyong

To-day I went to the Buninyong Markets.  Buninyong is a charming Victorian country village and now an outer suburb of Ballarat.  Once a month, on the third Saturday, it becomes Market Central.  THE market, so to speak, is organised by Rotary and you can find details here.

To my visitor's eye, I saw the market as a whole comprised of three sections.  Inside the Town Hall, seemed to be the Makers' Market: food, soaps, crafts, and so on.  Outside, the service lane coming parking area was taken over by things that grow.  This, to me, was the Farmers' Market.  This two/thirds was part of the Rotary bailiwick.

Next door at the Buninyong Uniting Church there was the third section: a Car Boot Sale.  I think some of the stuff there would not have fitted anywhere near a car boot.  There were crowds of stalls on the extensive front lawns of the church.  All manner of materials and things and books and things. Up next to the church itself is the church hall from where Uniting Church women served tea and biscuits alongside a table selling various goods and the whole in the midst of boxes and boxes of all manner of books.

I think it is a marvellous undertaking that Buninyong has embarked upon.  It brings people, goods and money to the village in a rather joyous jumble to make a marvellous whole.

To take a peek at the experience of going to market in Buninyong,

Garage Sale at Upper Gully - Reflections

The second day of the Garage Sale is drawing to a close. Just a few more hours and the gates will close and the signs will come down. It has a been a moderate success. A lot of stuff has gone. A lot still remains. But, dear Reader, if you couldn't make it or you don't live in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne don't fret. Before the month is out, it is expected that a By-Online-Blog will emerge: The Doll's House. You will be able to see the pretty things. If you are in town, by appointment you can come to play in The Doll's House. So stay tuned for more. You can always email for more information.

Blustery Brighton

I was in Brighton this afternoon. The beachfront was blustery. These pictures were taken at the end of North Road. The tide was in and the wind was making sea spray and white horses. Not quite cyclonic but significant force in the wind. Reports say 60kph - I'd say 60mph!
Away from the blustery beachfront and around in Durrant Street, I discovered the charm of Flower mee at No. 43. The talented Kathryn Weichmann pulls an array of wonderful goods and material together into a memorable whole. Kathryn told me she was in the process of clearing the decks somewhat to make space for the Christmas goodies. Can't wait to get Herself to schedule a visit with me to see what Santa has in store at Kathryn's hands.

Portfolio Optimization: Garage Sale 2

Portfolio Optimization is on again at The Trad Pad.

Two single women with too much stuff.

Two households and the remains of two shops are - after two and a half years - still being divested and blended as mother and daughter live together.

We are garage sale-ing this weekend.

For more information, email Miss Eagle off the side bar.

Here are some of the things:

Optimizing towards simplicity...and a wild mushroom

The optimization of the domestic portfolio has been deemed a success. Quite a lot of stuff marched out the back gate yesterday. One couple took quite a bit of our good stuff and left quite a few hundred bucks behind. Some stuff we let go for nothing. Other stuff went dirt cheap to a good home.

Our thirteen year old miniature fox terrier, FootFoot, enjoyed himself immensely. Some of his friends - who lavish pats upon him as they walk past - dropped by. He made some new friends. One woman, in particular, he seemed to be falling in love with. Turned out she was a dog trainer!

The result is that cupboard space has been freed up. A little less to dust and maintain and store. But oh, dear Reader, with what is left over plus the stuff we just didn't get a chance to put out because we were so busy, there is enough to do it again another day. Divest, divest, divest is the motto. The aim - simplicity, simplicity, simplicity.

And, our neighbour Betty came over with these....

...wild mushrooms.

A friend, she told us, had given them to her. He picks them wild in his paddock. She had a warning though. They had to be eaten to-day. If they couldn't all be eaten, then throw the rest away because on no account were they to be eaten the next day.

So lunch was funghi on lovely Italian bread, toasted, which Miss E purchased in North Carlton ten days ago and which is still wonderfully fresh. Scrumptious, simple and just the thing after a busy morning running a garage sale.
